On January 25th, the EU Parliament’s ENVI Committee gave the green light to the Commission’s proposal on New Genomic Techniques with 47 votes in favor, 31 against, and 4 abstentions. MEPs supported the idea of categorizing NGT plants into two groups: NGT 1, similar to conventional plants, exempt from GMO legislation, and NGT 2, subject to adapted GMO regulations. There’s also a consensus to uphold the ban on all NGT plants in organic production. Notably, the proposal underwent amendments, introducing a complete ban on patents for NGT plants.
