During the last plenary vote in Strasbourg, the EU Parliament dealt a severe blow to a key element of the EU Commission’s Green Deal, rejecting the Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR) aimed at reducing pesticide use in farming. The legislation, proposed in July 2022, sought to cut the use and risk of chemical pesticides in the EU by half, addressing concerns about their links to health issues and environmental degradation. Members of the European Parliament voted against it, with 299 opposing, 207 in favor, and 121 abstaining.

The rejection, celebrated by conservatives and farming groups, underscored the divide between environmental goals and concerns over the economic impact on farmers. In a surprising turn, left-wing groups, including the Greens and the Socialists & Democrats, voted against the final text, citing concerns over amendments that diluted the bill’s provisions.
